Biography Mr Thomas Dehn

Tom Dehn qualified in medicine in 1973 at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He undertook surgical training in Southampton, Barts, the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia and Oxford before being appointed as a Consultant Surgeon to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading in 1990. He was awarded a Mastership in surgery from the University of London in 1984.

He has a particular interest in upper gastrointestinal and keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery and has developed a national and international reputation in these procedures.

He introduced keyhole gall bladder surgery to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 1991, keyhole anti-reflux surgery in 1993 and keyhole groin hernia surgery in 1994.

His research work has led to many publications and presentations. Amongst other positions he is secretary of the Oesophageal section of the British Society of Gastroenterology, an elected Council member of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and a member of the Editorial Board of the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Most recently the UGI Unit and GI Physiology Laboratory at the Royal Berkshire Hospital has been awarded the Chairman's Prize (2003) for innovative working and excellence in their field.

In 2004 the NHS Peer Review Committee praised the Reading UGI cancer unit as a model of patient focused care. The committee unanimously recommended expansion of
the unit.
